In 2010 I spent four months travelling around Africa. I visited eleven countries in an overland truck, we slept in tents and carried only the essentials – including a camera!
Part of the trip involved visiting a village in Nkhata Bay, Malawi. We met the chiefs’ son who took us for a walk around and introduced us to his way of life.
In the village there was a school, a hospital and homes made from mud bricks. Inside the school classroom the students were sitting on the floor with their books and pens infront of them.
I was able to have a chat with one of the teachers and the headmaster, who both told me about how the school relies on donations for supplies. I remember the headmaster saying to me as I left his classsroom, “please dont forget about us.”
When I started the djb photography school in January 2011, I wanted to allocate part of the revenue from photography walks to an Africa donation fund. After one year of photography walks in Melbourne, we were able to sponsor a child for an entire year through the charity organisation So They Can.
On June 22 2012 – Samson came into our lives. So if you attend a walk, you’re also helping Samson :) I will keep you updated on the letters I send to and receive from Samson on this page.
